ALICE GIOVANNELLI
THE PROJECT
Sometimes I find inspiration unexpectedly. In 2014, I read with great interest and excitement,
"On the Road" by Jack Kerouac. This is a book I have still got under my skin. I also drew inspiration from it for my trip to the U.S.A in 2014.
Kerouac describes brilliantly describes his journey across thousands of miles of North America, with fascinating descriptions of his adventures, driving and hitch-hiking. Between fact and fiction, but just reading about a road trip across the United States, living and improvising like Kerouac did, is not enough. Planning is the key. That's why, before leaving, I set my schedule, prearranging the most important destinations of my trip. In order to do this I made a note of the most interesting and meaningful places that I wanted to see and experience for myself.
This was a very different and totally unique experience for me. Even though I was able to move and plan freely, I only had two weeks in which to explore as much as possible of this beautiful and diverse country. This meant that it was impossible to stop or stay a little longer in some of the places that impressed me and that deserved to be explored in better conditions.
My project consisted of a selection of the best photographs taken during this time. These will take you to the places I visited and will hopefully evoke the special atmosphere, the heat and the smells of these locations. At a first glance the shoots seem unconnected, but they are actually linked together in order to form a route: a sort of trip journal.
My photographs depict a number of the fascinating landscapes and elements which fascinated me during those two weeks, expressing the feelings and excitement I felt when I took them.
For me, a trip "on the road" turned into a "trip of memories": an irresistible desire for freedom, a searching for an independent individuality, a way to give expression to the passion for life.
